Why Rocky Oak Pet Puppies Are Sold Without Individual AKC Registration Papers
At Rocky Oak Cavaliers & Biewer Terriers, we believe in being transparent about our policies before a family ever commits to one of our puppies.
One question we occasionally receive is:
“If your Cavaliers are purebred, why don’t pet puppies come with AKC papers?”
It’s a fair question, and the answer begins with understanding what AKC registration actually means.
AKC Registration and Purebred Are Not the Same Thing
An AKC registration certificate is a record of a dog’s registration and ancestry within the American Kennel Club’s registry. Registration does not determine whether a puppy is healthy, well bred, properly socialized or a good representative of its breed.
Likewise, choosing not to provide individual registration papers with a pet puppy does not change that puppy’s parentage.
Our Cavaliers don’t become Cavaliers because someone prints a registration certificate. Their ancestry is their ancestry.
Why We Changed Our Policy
After 20 years of breeding, our policies have evolved along with our experience.
For many years, we provided Limited AKC Registration with pet puppies. Over time, however, we found that the overwhelming majority of our families weren’t looking for a dog to show or breed. They wanted a healthy, loving companion to become part of their family.
That’s what our pet-puppy program is designed for.
We eventually made the decision to stop providing individual AKC registration papers with puppies sold as pets.
This is not because there is anything questionable about their parentage, nor does it mean their parents aren’t registered. It is simply a policy we’ve chosen for our breeding program.
What Matters More to Us Than a Registration Certificate
A piece of paper has never raised a puppy.
It doesn’t sit up through the night when a mother is delivering. It doesn’t make decisions about which dogs should be bred. It doesn’t provide veterinary care, socialize puppies or stand behind the puppies after they leave.
We do.
Our priorities are the things that directly affect the puppy and the family receiving that puppy: thoughtful breeding decisions, health and temperament, appropriate veterinary care, proper raising and socialization, and placing each puppy in a home where we believe it will thrive.
Those things matter far more to us than whether a family pet has an individual registration certificate tucked away in a drawer.
What About Breeding or Showing?
That’s different.
Our advertised pet price is for a companion puppy and does not include breeding rights or individual AKC registration papers.
We do occasionally consider placing a puppy with breeding rights, but those placements are handled individually. We want to know the person, understand their plans and have a conversation about the responsibilities involved in breeding before making that decision.
Breeding rights should never be assumed simply because a dog is purebred.

When you purchase a pet puppy from us, you’re not purchasing a piece of paper.
You’re purchasing a puppy whose history we know, from dogs we’ve intentionally chosen, raised by a breeder with decades of experience behind the decisions being made.
And you’re getting something we believe is considerably more important:
A puppy we’ve put our time, knowledge, care and heart into raising.
If individual AKC registration is important to you, we completely understand. Every family has different priorities, and we encourage prospective puppy owners to choose a breeder whose policies align with what they’re looking for.
But if you’re looking for a Cavalier to share your couch, sleep in your bed, follow you from room to room and become a deeply loved member of your family—
that’s exactly what our pet puppies are intended to be.
